Bishop Margaret is a single mother of three. Ndimu Stephen Kariuki, a politician who has served as Mathare Member of Parliament, and Evans and Purity Kariuki are her children.
Her ex-husband, the late James Kamangu, died in late 2020 from what was considered to be alcoholic poisoning. Following their unresolved marriage, the two had been in and out of court. When Bishop Margaret was about to marry a preacher from South Africa named Samuel Matjeke in 2008, James Kamangu filed a petition at the High Court since their marriage had not been canceled and hence sought a stay of the forthcoming wedding. The late Kamangu died while married to another woman.
After catching the Coronavirus sickness in May 2020, Bishop Wanjiru battled it. Her condition was critical, necessitating Intensive Care Unit admission and oxygen support.
