Monica Kimani, a 28-year-old businessman, was discovered dead in her bathtub in 2018 after her brother George Kimani, with the help of neighbors, broke into her apartment after failing to reach her. This is how most Kenyans will come to know of Joseph Irungu, alias Jowie who was accused of the gruesome murder. Suddenly, he was plunged into the limelight with many media outlets reporting news of his arrest after he was linked with the murder of the businesswoman. It became even more interesting when Jackie Maribe, who was then a top news anchor at Citizen TV was arrested in connection with the killing.

Before his fame, Jowie was a member of a group in the town of Nakuru, where he grew up. The group entertained revelers in the towns of Naivasha and Nakuru. He is a founding member of Agape Stormers, where he is the lead singer and an instrumentalist. A friend who was interviewed by the Daily Nation said Jowie was “an inspiring singer. At Agape Church in Pangani Estate, off the busy Kanu Street in Nakuru Town…”

On September 25, 2018, Jowie was arrested and charged with the murder of Monica Kimani. This was followed by a court battle where witnesses testified and gave evidence. Jowie remained in custody throughout the process and twice requested bail but was denied. On the other hand, Jackie Maribe, also accused along with Jowie, was released on bail.
Prison life is not easy because he is in solitary confinement. According to Nairobi News, his parents were traveling from Nakuru district to Kamiti Maximum prison to visit him and they were only allowed to see him for 10 minutes.
In a Capital FM article, he revealed that he was among nine prisoners in solitary confinement. Prison is very lonely. Instead of being taken to the hospital, a doctor comes to see you, if someone wants the book, you apply and you only get the book after it's approved. It's definitely not a good place for most people.
After being denied bail, his friends including former Capital FM producer and Embakasi MP Babu Owino appealed for his release. The legislator argues that the justice system is unfair and is used by the powerful while the poor are denied justice.

Irungu's stars eventually aligned, and he was released on Ksh2 million bond on Thursday, 13th February 2020, and instructed not to discuss the issue while outside.

He recently released a gospel song called “Nishikilie” (Hold Me) on his YouTube channel, which garnered a significant number of subscribers and views. He said he didn't do it for the views but to touch even one person. In various interviews with Lynne Ngugi and Massawe Japani, he says that he is a conscious musician. According to him, he has learned that there is nothing like friends. He says he has no friends and makes peace with it. Joseph Irungu was found guilty of the murder of Monica Kimani as the long dragged case finally came to an end. Although the evidences against him were circumstancial, the magistrate ruled that ultimately they lead to his guild and will be serving a long long years in prison.
