Maraga, who is a Kisii by tribe, was born in Bonyamatuta in Nyamira County. Intense details about his childhood and teenage hood is not publicly known.
Chief Justice David Maraga was born on the 12th of January 1951. As at 2020, he is 69 years of age.
In 1977, Maraga graduated with a degree in Bachelor’s of Law from the University of Nairobi. He the pursued Master’s in law from the same university and graduated in 2011. He is also a recipient of a post-graduate diploma in law from the Kenya School of Law.
In 2003, Maraga made his first appearance as a High Court judge following his appointment by the former president Mwai Kibaki. The judge was then later elevated by the Judicial Service Commission to serve in the Court of Appeal. While serving as a judge at the Court of Appeal, Maraga ever vied for the presidency seat there, but lost to Justice Kihara Kariuki. In 2012, Justice Willy Mutunga appointed Maraga as the chair of the Kenya Judiciary Working Committee on Elections Preparations. Justice Maraga emerged the victorious in 2016 applications for Chief Justice position following the retirement of Willy Mutunga.
Marriage
CJ Maraga is married to Yucabeth Nyaboke, who is also a Kisii. The couple are staunch Seventh Day Adventist members. They are blessed with three children.

He also goes to history for cancelling presidential elections due to irregularities and illegalities found to have transpired during the election.
