Ngina Kenyatta (mama Ngina)'s Biography in Summary

Mama Ngina was born Ngina Muhoho in 1933 in Ngenda, Kiambu District, Central Province to Chief Muhoho wa Gathecha and Anne Nyokabi Muhoho. In 1951, she married Jomo Kenyatta as his fourth wife, a union described as a "gift" from Kenyatta's ethnic group, the Kikuyu. Mama Ngina Kenyatta, independent Kenya's glamorous First Lady when Kenyatta became President in 1963, was referred to as the "mother of the nation" as a result of this. She frequently accompanied him in public and had streets and a children's home named after her in Nairobi and Mombasa. She became a patron of Kenyan Guiding in 1965.

She and other high-level government officials were allegedly involved in an ivory-smuggling ring that flew tusks out of the country on the state private airliner in the 1970s. A May 1975 issue of New Scientist referred to her as one of Kenya's "ivory queens," but stated that they couldn't be certain that these claims were true. According to New Scientist, there is now documentary proof that at least one member of Kenya's royal family shipped more than six tons of ivory to Red China.

Mama Ngina converted to Roman Catholicism and was known to attend Mass at the Catholic mission with some of their children every Sunday. She also became one of Kenya's wealthiest people, owning plantations, ranches, and hotels.

FAMILY
Kristina Wamboi (born 1952), Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta (born 1961), Anna Nyokabi Muthama née Kenyatta (also known as Jeni, born May 1963), and Muhoho Kenyatta (born 1964) are Kenyatta's four children. Her son Uhuru Kenyatta, the senior Kenyatta's political heir, ran unsuccessfully for president in 2002 as President Moi's preferred successor and is now Kenya's fourth President. Muhoho Kenyatta manages the family's vast business while remaining out of the public eye. Ngina stayed with Jomo Kenyatta during his exile in Lodwar and Maralal, as did their daughters, Jane and Wamboi. Mama Ngina is Kenyatta's stepmother to his other three children, two by his first wife and one by his second.

One of her brothers is Monsignor George Muhoho, the Roman Catholic chaplain at the University of Nairobi.
