A quick Google search reveals that young actress Stycie Waweru recently appeared in Ashley's 2021 Netflix film, Just In Time.
Dive deeper, and you'll notice that her impressive IMDb (Internet Movie Database) profile has a growing list of credits, including roles in Lusala (2019) and Supa Modo, the 2019 superhero film that launched her career.
The young actress has worked alongside top Kenyan actresses Sarah Hassan and Pierra Makena, and her roles have been featured by CNN, Deutsche Welle, Rotten Tomatoes, Toronto Guardian, and many other top news platforms and publications. Her roles frequently highlight girl-child empowerment, reflecting the lives of modern Africans.
Waweru has been working on the globally acclaimed Super Sema series with a team at Kukua, an edutainment startup based in Nairobi, under the guidance of Kenya's most well-known film star, Lupita Nyong'o.
She provides the voice for the main character, Sema.
In the series, her character, along with a twin brother, fights a villainous super robot named Tobor in order to protect the twins' hometown. To Waweru's delight, the series has amassed a global fan base.
Her father, Joseph Njata, who also serves as her manager, has been instrumental in her meteoric rise to fame, while her mother, Agnes Muigai, is widely credited with shaping the star who can be seen on screens across Africa and the world.
Waweru was born while her father worked as a booking clerk at Nairobi's Sarit Center's Fox Theatres. He would get free movie tickets for his family to enjoy new releases, so she didn't need a movie ticket from the start. The young girl, armed only with popcorn, would become lost in a world of animated films seen on the big screen.
Her father began coaching her on how to act in front of the camera as her interest and curiosity grew.
Stycie began acting in school plays when she was four years old, and her talent was quickly recognized.
She won a string of awards at drama festivals, and her big break came when she was nine years old and landed the lead role in Supa Modo.
Her father, who had studied at Rwanda's Kwetu Film Institute, made certain that she continued to build opportunities in film and voice-over production, effectively preparing her for a big career break.
Waweru has been riding high as the lead in Super Sema. Working on the series with Nyong'o is a dream come true for her. Waweru, who is bubbly by nature, comes across as years ahead of her peers intellectually and clearly enjoys interacting with the series' team.
